TRADING SPACES: BOYS VS. GIRLS
(Discovery Kids, 2003-2005; ages 9-14)

Following the Trading Spaces craze for adults, Discovery Kids created this entertaining series where teams of tweens decorate each other’s rooms. One’s own room is a very special place. Not only do tweens sleep in their room, many play, do homework and build friendships in their room. No other place in a household is their very own other than their bedroom. It is no wonder tweens love to express themselves in the way they decorate it. Trading Spaces: Boys Vs. Girls showcase this love of expression in a creative and playful way.

The tweens break up into two teams and swap rooms. They get a professional decorator and a carpenter to work with them. With the decorator they work to come up with a room that encapsulates the other person’s personality. This makes tweens think about the other person and what he or she would like or not like. What makes this reality show so great is that they are genuinely trying to redecorate the room in way that the person would enjoy. The show also throws in challenges so the teams can compete for things such as extra time to complete projects. This adds a friendly competitiveness to the show and also adds a little extra drama. They also add a confessional camera where the tweens can do self interviews about how the process is going. What tween doesn’t love talking into a camera and being silly? In end they show each other their rooms and the cool decorations they completed. Not only does the show teach tweens about ways to decorate their own rooms, it also shows teamwork, creativity and the joy of doing something for someone else. —Katie Aust
